When you move to a new country, one way to understand the policies, systems and practices that are in use there is to learn about the history of the country. What have been the key events and turning points of Finnish history? How have they affected the inhabitants and the development of the Finnish state? An immigrant sometimes goes through a lengthy process before the new country of residence starts to feel like home, a place where you belong. How can future skills help immigrant to integrate in Finland?

After completing this section, the participant of the civic orientation will:

• know the key events in Finnish history
• understand the ways in which historical events have affected Finland’s development as a state and a society
• know what opportunities there are in Finland for family life, work, studying, influencing, and participating

• can plan their future in Finland based on what have learned during the course.
